What is Biowood ?
Biowood is a WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) material made from 70% plantation forest wood and 30% additives and PVC (plastic). Because PVC is biologically and chemically resistant, it is used for a variety of applications, predominantly for areas where corrosion would limit the use of metal. PVC is used in window and door frames, cabling and wire insulators. It is also used to make vinyl records. Common uses include drinking water distribution and waste-water mains. PVC is also sometimes used in clothing to create a leather-like water resistant material. PVC fabric has a sheen to it and is used in coats, skiing equipment, shoes, jackets, aprons and bags.
The 70% wood part of Biowood is from plantation grown wood. Sawmill waste is collected and turned into wood flour. It is then combined with virgin and/or recycled plastic resin, and blended with pigments to make pellets of more than 20 different colours. These pellets are then combined to make a range of products of various colours through a heated extrusion process. The elements and the way they are combined makes Biowood a very durable, stable, attractive, easy to use, recyclable building product.
Please take the time to do your own research on wood plastic composite decking. The information provided here are based on Australian and International testing results. Of most significance are results from our very own CSIRO, The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.
